Egypt’s march towards democracy appears to have come to a screeching halt at a roadblock named reality.

I wrote recently that I’d love to cheer for the protesters and remain hopeful for Egypt’s future but…..events can change.

Now according to The Globe and Mail’s Patrick Martin in Cairo, they have.

Here’s the front page I spotted seconds after walking out of my Calgary hotel room today.

Those who thought Egypt was on the fast track to democracy had better think again. That was the message issued Sunday by Egypt’s official new rulers: The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

It became obvious to the several hundred protesters still occupying Tahrir Square when the army, moving at dawn Sunday, allowed traffic to once again cross the city’s largest central square (and ground zero of the popular uprising). It was a rude awakening.

Hopefully this will be a rude awakening for the media as well, so happy to see Mubarak gone that they haven’t paid enough attention to the fact that democracy may not flourish quite so quickly.
